Just prior to World War II the idea of establishing a congregation in Clinton was born. In 1937, a brush arbor was erected on the site of the present building and preacher’s home. Houston C. Graddy, Buford Graddy, Jr., and Porter Eubanks erected this temporary meeting place. Shortly thereafter, Brother Graddy was instrumental in seeing that a permanent building was constructed.
In 1940, this building was completed and services were first held in it. By 1963, congregational growth made it necessary to add on to the existing structure. Just 10 years later, a growth in numbers required more expansion which was completed in 1977. This is the structure which presently stands at the corner of Third and Poplar Streets upon the original site of the brush arbor.
A history of a congregation is not made up of just a few men. It would be impossible to mention all that have contributed to the advancement of the congregation, for each member has had a part in its history and growth. A history of a congregation is not that of a building, but of people -- people who are willing, by their faith in God, to sacrifice of themselves and their means that the kingdom of God might grow and exist in a certain area. The story is still being written, and different people will rise up with vision and leadership to carry forth the work. The desire of those early men and women is shared by the present membership—to have a place to worship and serve God according to His commands.
